Sugared Ribbons
What You Need:
  • 4 oz flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 oz margarine
  • 2 tablespoons sour milk or cream
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Deep fat for frying
  • Icing sugar
  • Strawberry-or cherry jam

  • How To Cook:
    1. Sieve the flour and salt together and rub in the margarine.

    2. Mix in the sour milk or cream and the egg yolk, and then leave in a cool place for about ˝ hour.

    3. Roll out the pastry very thinly and, using a pastry wheel cut it into strips of even length, about 1 inch wide.

    4. Make slits in some of the ribbons and thread the ends through to make fancy knot shapes.

    5. Fry in hot fat until golden-brown and crisp, and serve sprinkled with icing sugar and accompanied by jam.
