Flamed Bananas
(Bananes Flambees)
What You Need:
  • 4 ripe bananas
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • Powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup brandy, fruit-flavored brandy, or Kirsh

  • How To Cook:
    1. Peel the bananas, cut lengthwise, and then cut crosswise. Melt the butter in a baking dish in the microwave oven.

    2. Coat each side of the bananas with the butter and arrange in a circle (like the spokes of a wheel) with the pointed-end toward the middle and the cut-end toward the outside.

    3. Have the flat side of the banana face-down. Cook, covered with wax paper, until tender (only a few minutes). Be careful to not overcook. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

    4. Warm the brandy 15 seconds in a handled cup in the microwave oven. Pour around the bananas and flame.

    5. Whipped cream makes a nice topping. Sprinkle on chopped toasted nuts or shaved chocolate.

    NOTE:
Use the red plantain bananas, if they are available. When flaming any food, make certain it is not beneath anything that can catch fire. The flame dies out in a short while, but alcohol flames are hot. The arrangement of the bananas suggested above will give the most even cooking possible.

    To Serve: 4
