What You Need:

  • 1 bottle Swedish aquavit or gin
  • 1 tablespoon cardamom seeds
  • ½ teaspoon cloves
  • 1 - 2 bottles burgundy or claret
  • About 1½ inches stick cinnamon
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 small piece of lemon or bitter orange peel
  • ½ cup sugar

  • How To Cook:
    1. Pour half the aquavit or gin and all the red wine into a large saucepan; add the raisins and sugar; tie the spices and peel in a piece of muslin and add them.

    2. Cover the pan, bring very slowly to boiling point and then simmer for ½ hour.

    3. Add the remaining spirit, remove the pan from the heat and set light to the punch.

    4. Using a long-handled ladle, pour into warmed punch glasses and serve with raisins and almonds.
